Sutherland, David MacBeth, RSA
1883 – 1973
Initially worked in a law office before working for a lithographic firm and then studying at the Trustees Academy and the RSA Life School. He won the RSA Carnegie scholarship and visited Spain in 1911. From circa 1913, he joined the teaching staff at Edinburgh College of Art. He served in the Great War and then returned to his teaching in Edinburgh marrying Dorothy Johnstone, ARSA in 1924. In 1933 he became Head of Gray's School of Art retiring in 1948. He exhibited at the RSA from 1906 until 1973 and became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1922 and an Academician in 1936.
