Gavin, Robert, RSA
1826 – 1883
Studied at the Trustees Academy under Thomas Duncan and initially produced genre scenes of everyday Scottish life, scenes from Shakespeare and portraits. In 1868-69 he settled in New Orleans and between 1874 and 1878 he visited North Africa residing in Tangier, Morocco. As a result of these trips, his work began to focus almost exclusively upon American and then Moorish subjects, particularly female subjects. He exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1846 until 1882, he became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1855 and an Academician in 1879.
