Reid, George, Sir, PPRSA RSA HRHA

1841 – 1913

Apprenticed to a firm of Lithographers in Aberdeen at the age of 13. Moved to Edinburgh in 1862 and entered the Trustees Academy. In 1866 he spent time in the studio of Alexander Mollinger in Utrecht and met Josef Israels when he visited the Hague. Reid proceeded to study in Paris for a year and then returned to Scotland in 1869. From 1871 onwards Reid tended to specialise in portraiture although he continued to also produce landscapes which showed the influence of Dutch painting. Throughout his career he also provided illustrations for numerous books and magazines. He exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1862 until 1912. Reid became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1870 and an Academician in 1877. He became the seventh President of the RSA in 1891 a post which he held until his resignation in 1902. During his period as President he was seen to be rather reactionary particularly in relation to artists such as the Glasgow Boys. He was knighted in 1891.
