Ross, Thomas, FSA
1839 – 1930
A partner with David McGibbon as McGibbon and Ross (1872-1902) having previously worked as McGibbon's Assistant for the decade since 1862. Following McGibbon's death his son succeeded as partner with Ross until the business was dissolved in 1914, with Ross retiring as an architect in 1916. With McGibbon he was responsible for the major 5-volume study 'The Castellated and Domestic Architecture of Scotland,' and 'The Ecclesiastical Architecture of Scotland' which came later. Ross was was a member of the Edinburgh Architectural Association serving as President. In 1908 he was appointed the founder commissioner of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland. In 1918 he was elected Professor of Antiquities to the Royal Scottish Academy. He was co-editor with Sir Robert Rowand Anderson and William T Oldrieve of the 'Examples of Scottish Architecture from the 12th to the 17th century: A Series of Reproductions from the National Art Survey Drawings' from 1921.
