Casson was appointed Director of Architecture for the 1951 Festival of Britain which launched his public profile. In 1976 he was elected as President of the Royal Academy, a post he held for 8 years, during which he established the US Friends and is acclaimed as one of the most successful Presidents in the history of the RA. He was elected HRSA in 1977.
