Carpenter, Margaret Sarah
1793 – 1872
A daughter of Captain Geddes of Edinburgh, she studied portraiture at Lord Radnor's collection in Longford Castle before going on to London in 1814 where she exhibited under her maiden name at the RA (1814-17) and under her married name (1818-66). Her husband was William Carpenter snr, himself a painter and Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum. She appears to have ceased exhibiting around the time of her husband's death [1866] and exhibited only twice at the RSA in 1832. Her brother-in-law was William Collins RA.
