Roche, Alexander Ignatius, RSA

1861 – 1921

The son of a milliner, attended St Mungo's Academy and initially began to train as an architect but decided on painting instead and attended classes at Glasgow School of Art. Went to Paris in the early 1880's and trained at the Academie Julien under Boulanger and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Gerome. Whilst in Paris he was influenced by the work of Bastien Lepage and was friends with Lavery. Roche became part of the Glasgow Boy circle and later worked at Grez-sur-Loing. Roche initially exhibited at the RGI from 1881 and had a studio in Glasgow but from 1887 until 1921 he also exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions. He became an Associate Member in 1893 and an Academician in 1900.
