Dodds, Tim

b. 1978

Studied MFA at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 2014. "About Tim Dodds The painting process is central in my practice, it provides a means for me, not only to observe, but investigate and articulate, in a phenomenological sense, my understanding of the world and how it is put together. Implicit in my approach is speculation of what the act of painting might mean and its potential in the context of the digital age, with its globalised image networks and the prevalence of 'cut and paste' image appropriation. As such, I am concerned with how Modern and pre-Modern ideas of painting can be developed in a post-internet world. In my work I deliberately blur hierarchies, classifications and values of objects in the search for new, sometimes absurd configurations of imagery, and to intensify this, I also combine both traditional and technological methods and references. For example, 'Courgette Apostrophe', and 'Still Life with Flying Objects' are scenes painted from direct observation in which I have collaged my own photographs of objects (such as a courgette, or a piece of wood), forming a dialogue which subverts the definition of these two different modes of representation. In 'Stella Octangula', abstract, painterly effects are achieved by exploiting the colour limitations of inkjet technology in printing the digital photograph of a predominantly blue studio scene on an epic, history painting scale. In 'Versace' and 'Still Life with Sticks', representations of mass media and production are subtly incorporated into the painting (e.g. a magazine advert, a Sun-Pat jar). My deliberately placed compositions negotiate the conflation of public/private - interior/exterior realities. Familiar items are put alongside less defined things such as handmade sculptures and geometric forms. For my MFA degree show, I presented my work together with Thomas Aitchison in 'Musée', an installation comprised of found panels and steel frameworks covered in plastic sheeting which encouraged close looking through the construction of a liminal, abstract environment. Setting the work apart from the institutional space of the academy, 'Musée' critiqued the trope of slick degree show displays while undermining this prospect, doubly defying expectations. Less Education: Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh.
