Barns-Graham, Wilhelmina, CBE HRSA HRWA HRSW
1912 – 2004
Born in St Andrews in Fife, Scotland, Barns-Graham studied at Edinburgh College of Art (1931-37). She became associated with the modernist movement that developed amongst artists in and around St Ives in Cornwall, England, to where she moved early in 1940. She thus became one of the leading modern British abstractionists enjoying international contacts and exposure. By her Will Barns-Graham established a Charitable Trust in her name which both promotes her own work and to provide bursaries for art students. One of these, the Barns-Graham Travel Scholarship, first presented in 2006 is funded by the Trust and administered by the Royal Scottish Academy.
