Raeburn, Henry, Sir, RA

1756 – 1823

Raeburn died shortly before the Royal Scottish Academy was founded, but his influence, like that of Alexander Nasmyth HRSA and Sir David Wilkie RA HRSA, on the generation of artists who were involved in the early days of the Academy was huge. Not only was Raeburn the leading Scottish portraitist of his day, but he was also involved in the establishment of a precursor of sorts to the Academy through his involvement with the Society of Artists. This group of artists which included both men and women, organised a series of exhibition which were held in Edinburgh intermittently over the first two decades of the 19th Century as an opportunity for contemporary artists and sculptors to exhibit and sell their work. Two of the Society's exhibitions were held in Raeburn's premises on York Place, Edinburgh. In addition to a pair of oil painting portraits by Raeburn, the RSA Collection contains a number of prints after his work as well as a collection of memorabilia which includes his sitter's chair and his palette. The Academy Archive holds the complete run of catalogues (1808-16) as well as the Minute Book of the Society of Artists (1808-13), and a framed letter intimating the Society’s launch.
