Small, William Farquharson
b. 1906
A native of Dundee, Small studied Sculpture at Glasgow School of Art where he was awarded a Special Prize in Sculpture in 1928. He went into the theatre producing plays as well as designing the scenery and working in Scoltand and in London. He was latterly employed by the BBC. He was Producer of the first film review programme on television called Current Release. He then moved to the News Department at the BBC where he was also responsible for making the "Party Films" to entertain staff at the BBC Club Christmas Parties (vide http://www.bbctv-ap.co.uk/club.htm for details and a b&w photo of "Farky" in later life). The Radio Times of 6 May 1949 reported on its front page that during the last month he with Graham Hutton had spent travelling through Western Germany with a recording unit talking to its citizens about trade, commerce, living standards etc, to be broadcast on Sunday 14 May titled Window on Western Germany. Small also wrote at least 2 books Meet the People (1949, with Warwick Chalton) and Out and About in London (1961). He was a frequent attendee of the Chelsea Art Club [New Year's] Ball from 1936 to at least 1956, where he was a guest of his friend from student days, the sculptor Loris Rey who lived and worked in Chelsea..
