Gamley, Andrew Archer, RSW

1869 – 1949

The younger brother of Henry Snell Gamley RSA. Andrew Gamley became the recipient of the inaugural RSA Carnegie Scholarship in 1903. He used his award to travel to Paris, leaving Edinburgh on 1904-02-20. In Paris he studied in the afternoons at Julien's Academy under Jean Paul Laurent, spending his free time visiting other Museums, Galleries and buildings of interest. Some of which he details in the letter to the RSA which is transcribed in the RSA Council Minutes 1904-05-31; "I have also been visiting many of the principal buildings - such as the Hotel de Ville...and the Pantheon which holds the great decorations by Puvis de Chavannes and other works." He was elected RSW in 1924.
