Chantrey, Francis Leggatt, Sir, RA
1781 – 1841
Elected ARA 1816 and full Royal Academician just two years later in 1818. Chantrey died in 1841, the same year as Sir David Wilkie HRSA, and by his Will created the Chantrey Bequest giving power to the President and Council of the RA to purchase paintings and sculpture of the highest quality by artists of any nation provided they had been executed entirely in Great Britain. The Bequest only became effective on the death of Chantrey's wife which happened in 1875 and the first purchases were made in 1877. The Chantrey Bequest collection is housed by the Tate Gallery for the nation.
