Cocker, Doug, RSA

b. 1945

Born in Perthshire, Cocker comes from a long line of farmers and blacksmiths. His work speaks of the history of the rural Perthshire landscape he grew up in. He studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee (1963-68) winning a Scottish Education Department travelling scholarship in 1966 which took him to Italy and Greece. He carried out postgraduate study in New York and Greece in 1968 and 1969 as a result of a Greenshields Foundation Fellowship. Lecturer in sculpture at Nene College, Northampton (1972-81) followed by posts at the University of Edinburgh; Glasgow School of Art; Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen; and Duncan of Jordanstone. Cocker was elected ARSA in 1984 and full Academician in 2005.
