Clarke, Derek, OBE RSA
1912 – 2014
Trained as an artist at Slade School of Art, London. Between 1937 and 1939 he lived and painted in the Republic of Ireland at Connemara and during the war he served in the Durham Light Infantry in Tunisia. His wife Ann Swan died in 1974 and in 1992 he married the artist Pat Semple. After the War he taught drawing, painting and anatomy at Edinburgh College of Art until his retirement in 1978. He became an ARSA in 1989 and an RSA in 2005. He began to exhibit at the RSA in 1948. Clarke was the first elected member of the RSA to achieve his century.
