Wyllie, George, RSA
1931 – 2012
George Wyllie was born in Gourock. He worked as a Post Office engineer before serving in the Royal Navy in the Second World War after which he worked as a Customs Officer in Ireland and on the West Coast of Scotland. In the 1950s he attended art classes and since then he has worked as a sculptor in a wide range of materials and as a performance artist. His best known works was his 'Paper Boat' which he launched on the Clyde in 1989 and was a reflection on the decline of the ship building industry on Clydeside and his 'Straw Locomotive' burnt at Springburn in 1987.
