McIntosh, Iain Redford, RSA

1945 – 2021

Trained at Gray's School of Art between 1962 and 1967, awarded Govenors and Founder's Prize in 1964. Won the Queen's Award for Art and Design Scholarship in 1965. He worked mainly in wood but also in stone and marble and his work often has a strong nautical theme. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1981 and an Academician in 2005.He was Keeper of the Collections from 2010 to 2013 and an ardent and hugely popular supporter of the Friends, serving on their Board and also as Friends’ Secretary. He taught at the Mearns Academy, Laurencekirk - where he was Head of the Art Department for many years. He resided in Montrose and was a close friend and neighbour of the late James Morrison RSA. Iain was part of the first major Scottish Sculpture Open held at Kildrummy Castle in 1981, exhibiting alongside other Academicians, Fred Bushe, Doug Cocker, Frank Pottinger, Bill Scott, Andy Stenhouse, and Arthur Watson. He was also involved in a long collaboration with Willie Rodger RSA making woodcarvings based on Willie’s prints.
