Brown, William Beattie, RSA
1831 – 1909
The son of an Edinburgh farmer turned fine art dealer, he was educated at Leith High School and the Trustees Academy under Robert Scott Lauder. Initially worked as a glass stainer at James Ballantine & Son in Edinburgh and then restoring paintings for Henry Doig art dealer and framer. Travelled in France, Belgium and Holland but is best known for his dramatic Highland landscapes. Worked predominantly in oil. Exhibited at the RSA Annual exhibitions from 1852 until 1909. Became an Associate Member in 1871 and an Academician in 1884. Note that sometimes he signed his canvases, as in the case of his Diploma Work, with the double-barrelled surname 'Beattie-Brown'.
