Highet or Hamilton, Catherine
1854 – 1948
The daughter of John Highet, Bookseller and Agnes Hargen of Highet.
She married the painter James Hamilton ARSA at her home, Somerville House, South Beach, Troon, on 1889-04-23 when she was recorded as a 35 year old spinster.
She died, aged 94, at Newbattle Manse, where she resided with her son Rev Dr John Arnott Hamilton who registered her death.
As Kate Hamilton she exhibited a single work at the RSA AX 1890 and a further two at the same exhibition in 1900 from different addresses in Edinburgh.
She was the mother of Rev Dr John Arnott Hamilton who made two important endowments to the RSA in 1949 (The Mrs Catherine Hamilton Fund, in memory of his mother, to augment widows' pensions) and supplementing this in 1959 when he also endowed the Rev Dr Arnott Hamilton Donation for the purchase of works by members of the Academy.
