Nasmyth, Alexander, HRSA

1758 – 1840

Heralded as the father of Scottish Landscape Painting.

Took many pupils including Alexander Stuart of Crieff, Archibald Robertson of Aberdeen, and numerous women including the mathematician Mary Fairfax and Mrs Cumming (nee Ouchterlonie), his sons James and Patrick, and daughters Charlotte, Jane and Margaret were also trained by him.

Involved in the Society of Artists in Edinburgh in the period 1808-13 and its successor body. He declined to add his name to the ranks of the Scottish Academy on its foundation in 1826 but extended his support to it and was elected an HRSA in 1832.

He is buried in St Cuthbert's graveyard at the western end of Princes Street in Edinburgh.

J C B Cooksey published the only biography to date on Nasmyth in 1987.
