Shanks, Thomas Hovell, RSW
1921 – 2020
Watercolour artist who chronicled the Scottish landscape, favouring in particular the West coast of Scotland with hills and water often combining in his powerful works in pen and ink and watercolour. After studying at GSA (1946-50) where he gained a travelling scholarship that took him to France, Italy and Belgium, he worked as a Carpet Designer, before taking up a post as Stage Designer for Rutherglen Repartory Theatre. He undertook freelance mural painting, then designer and screenprinter for The Edinburgh Tapestry Company (Dovecot Studio), before becoming a secondary school art teacher in Renfrewshire. Elected RSW in 1960 he was elected a Member of the Glasgow Group in 1972.
