Cardosi, Mathieu

b. 2001

Cardosi has written of his practice; "My work seeks to capture the romantic beauty and melancholy embedded in the abandoned structures of post-industrial landscapes and our natural environments." He was the recipient of the RSA David Michie Travel Award in 2023 and undertook his travel to Berlin in Germany recording his experience in a series of five paintings of derelict buildings and sites which were painted in situ. On his return to Scotland a further two were completed based on photographs and some sketches. This was effectively a continuation from interests explored in his degree show, but were more open and contemplative in their feel than those he had executed for his degree show where his focus was more on the creepiness of abandoned buildings. He spent two and a half months in Berlin learning more about the history of places than he had expected and which resulted in a period of intense creative writing on his return.
