Hill, Alexander

1800 – 1866

Brother of D.O.Hill RSA. Publisher, Printseller, Art Dealer and Artists' Supplier from 50 Princes Street (1828-41) and 67 Princes Street (1841-66). He moved at some point between April and August 1841. Appointed Printseller and Colourman to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1830. In 1824 Hill married Agnes Paton, daughter of a Glasgow Builder. She died 1832-06-15 at their home, 6 Mansfield Place, Edinburgh exactly one week after giving birth to the couple's son Thomas Alexander Hill (1832-98). Scotland's leading and most successful print publisher. Hill died in London in 1866 where he was attending a civil court case. He is one of the few non-Members of the Academy to be accorded an Obituary notice in the RSA Annual Report for 1866, notice X;
