Stevenson, David Watson, RSA

1841 – 1904

The son of William Stevenson, Builder, and Margaret Kay or Stevenson his wife, David Watson Stevenson was the brother of the sculptor William Grant Stevenson RSA. He trained under the sculptor William Brodie RSA for a period of eight years whilst also studying at the Trustees Academy and at the RSA Life School. In 1876 he went to Rome to further his studies and throughout his life visited Paris. He specialised in portrait busts and figure pieces often of women and girls. He also produced a number of public sculptures including statues for the Scott Monument and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. He exhibited at the RSA from 1859 until 1903, he became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1877 and an Academician in 1886.He died in Longmore Hospital, Edinburgh and was a batchelor.
