Alma-Tadema, Lawrence, Sir, RA

1836 – 1912

Dutch-born, Alma-Tadema settled in England in 1870 and became one of the most popular of the Victorian Romantic painters. His figurative works for the most part focused on the luxury and decadence of Ancient Rome and were particularly admired for the skill with which he captured a broad range of textures including flesh, furs, fabric, metals and stonework.
