Carrick, Alexander, RSA

1882 – 1966

Alexander Carrick trained at the Royal Institution School and worked as an apprentice to William Birnie Rhind RSA and then proceeded to study at South Kensington and to work in London. When he returned to Edinburgh he worked for two years as an assistant to Pittendrigh MacGillivray RSA. After the First World War he moved to the Borders and between 1918 and 1942 he taught at Edinburgh College of Art and became the Head of the Sculpture Department. He worked on many public sculpture commissions including the War Memorial at Edinburgh Castle. He worked in bronze and stone and produced portraits and figure pieces. He exhibited at the RSA between 1910 and 1954. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1918 and an Academician in 1929.
