The son of a clock and watchmaker George Harvey, who was at St.Ninian's by Stirling (by 1804) and at 80 Baker's Street, Stirling (by 1834), Sir George Harvey was educated at the High School in Stirling and was then initially appreticed to a book seller but wishing to be an artist he went to Edinburgh in 1824 to study at the Trustees Academy under Sir William Allan. In 1826 he became a Foundation Associate of the (Royal) Scottish Academy and was to be active in the success and development of the Academy throughout his life. In 1829 he became a Royal Scottish Academician and in 1864 he became the Fourth President of the Academy and was knighted in 1867. He specialised in scenes from Scottish Life and Scottish History Paintings, most famously his Covenanters series. From the mid 1850's onwards he began to turn increasingly to landscape painting and portraiture. For his landscapes he used watercolour for sketching and then oil for the finished paintings. He exhibited prolifically at the RSA between 1827 and 1875.
