Annan, Thomas

1830 – 1887

An early Scottish photographer, he established his business in Glasgow in 1855, subsequently taking on his brother Robert as a partner in 1873 when the business became T & R Annan. He is best known for the series of photographs which he took of some of the most deprived and overcrowded areas of Glasgow which housed dwellings deemed to fall well below the standards demanded by the health authorities, and which had been earmarked for demolition under the City of Glasgow Improvement Act of 1866. The photographs, alongside a subsequent set taken in 1877 were commissioned by the Trustees of the Improvement Act. Annan became a leading photographer and publisher of artistic reproductions, including David Octavius Hill's monumental canvas of 'The Disruption of the Church of Scotland, The First General Assembly of the Free Church Signing The Act of Separation and Deed of Demission, Tanfield, Edinburgh, 23rd May 1843.'
