Brown, William Marshall, RSA

1863 – 1936

William Marshall Brown intially worked as a book illustrator and studied art in the evening at the Trustees Academy and at the RSA Life School between 1884 and 1888 winning the Stuart Prize and the Chalmers Bursary. He travelled in Holland, Belgium and France, especially Concarneau, which provided him with the sources of inspiration throughout his career for his paintings of fisherfolk and everyday life. He also painted scenes of Scottish life. He exhibited regularly at the RSA from 1883 until 1936. He became an Associate Member in 1909 and an Academician in 1928. He married Mary Brown Robertson at Edinburgh [16 ?Wardale? Crescent] 1912-06-21. He was listed as a 49 year old batchelor artist, figure and landscape, of 26 Rankeillour Street, Edinburgh, his father's occupation given as a watchmaker. Mary was listed as a 25 year old spinster of 19 Warrender Park Road, daughter of William Robertson, Wine Merchant and Mary Elspeth Heron or Robertson who married in Edinburgh 1885-01-15
