Born in Falkirk in 1940, she studied at Edinburgh College of Art where Sir W G Gillies RSA would have first encountered her. She married fellow student Kenneth Dingwall (b.1938) in Edinburgh in 1961. Her father Tom Alexander (1915-2000) formed one of the finest collections of 20th century British art much of it bought for under £40 a piece.
