The younger brother of Robert Scott Lauder, RSA, James Eckford Lauder studied at the Trustees Academy under Sir William Allan from 1830 until 1833. He then proceeded to travel to Rome where he continued his studies alongside his brother returning to Edinburgh in 1839. He specialised in scenes from history and literature but from 1857 he tended to focus increasingly on landscape painting. In 1847 he won a £200 premium at the Westminster Hall competition for a painting entitled "The Unjust Steward." He exhibited at the RSA from 1833 until 1869. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1839 and an Academician in 1846.
