Macbeth, Norman, RSA

1821 – 1888

Norman Macbeth was initially apprenticed to an engraver in Glasgow as a boy for a period of seven years. He then went to London where he studied at the Royal Academy Schools before visiting Paris. In 1841 he went back home to Greenock and began his career as a portrait painter moving to Glasgow in 1848. He moved to Edinburgh in 1861. For the last two years of his life he lived in London. He exhibited at the RSA from 1846 until 1888. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1870 and an Academician in 1880.
