Armour, Mary Nicol Neill, RSA

1902 – 2000

Mary Steel, was educated initially at Hamilton Academy under Penelope Beaton (later elected ARSA) and then at Glasgow School of Art from 1920 until 1925. Married William Armour RSA in 1927. Took up a teaching post from 1951 until 1962 at Glasgow School of Art, teaching still life. She began to exhibit at the RSA Annual Exhibitions in 1932 having won the Guthrie award in 1937 but officially stopped painting in 1988. She became a Member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour RSW in 1956. Armour became only the second female Academician of the RSA in 1958 having previously been elected an Associate in 1941.
