Educated at Edinburgh College of Art and at Edinburgh University from 1951 - 1955. Travelled to Spain, Morocco and Italy as part of the Andrew Grant Travelling Scholarship in 1958. In 1963 he won the RSA Guthrie Award. He proceeded to join the teaching staff in the School of Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art. He has exhibited at the RSA from 1957. he became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1970 and an Academician in 1981.
