Mackie, Charles Hodge, RSA

1862 – 1920

Born in England but moved to Edinburgh as a young boy. Studied at the Trustees Academy and at the RSA Life Class from 1881, winning the Stuart Prize in 1884. He became involved with Professor Patrick Geddes designing a series of murals for the Royal Infirmary in 1887 and designing the cover illustration to Geddes' Celtic Revivalist publication "The Evergreen". Later he visited Pont Aven in France and met Gaugin and other members of the Nabis movement. In 1903 he travelled to Spain and in 1908 he visited Venice. He lived in Normandy between 1904 and 1909 setting up a studio near Etaples. He exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibition from 1880 until 1920, he became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1902 and an Academician in 1917. He was a founder member of the Society of Scottish Artists and in 1900 he became President of this organisation.
