Cassie, James, RSA

1819 – 1879

James Cassie moved from his native Inverurie to Aberdeen as a baby in 1820. He was a largely self-taught artist although he received some tuition from James Giles RSA in his studio. From the 1860s he specialised in painting seascapes and coastal scenes of Deeside in oil and watercolour showing at times the influence of the Dutch School. He exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1840 until 1879 and also exhibited at the RA. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1869 and an Academician in 1879.
