Peploe, Denis Frederic Neal, RSA

1914 – 1993

The son of Samuel John Peploe, RSA, Denis was educated at Edinburgh Academy and proceeded to study at Edinburgh College of Art from 1931-1936 alongside artists such as Wilhelmina Barns Graham. After graduating he had a studio at the College and was awarded the Andrew Grant Travelling Scholarship working in Andre Lhote's atelier. In 1936 he visited Spain. After serving in the Second World War, he returned to Edinburgh and resumed his career as an artist visiting the West Highlands. He was Art Master at Fettes College from 1948-1950 and in 1953 he joined the teaching staff at Edinburgh College of Art under Sir W. G. Gillies retiring in 1979. Denis Peploe exhibited at the RSA from 1938-1985, he became an Associate Member in 1956 and an Academician in 1966.
