Lockhart, William Ewart, RSA

1846 – 1900

At the age of 15 in 1861 Lockhart came to Edinburgh he studied under John Blake McDonald from 1862 at the RSA Life School. In 1863 on health grounds he travelled to Australia and two years later he visited Spain which had a great effect on his work as did the Spanish paintings of John Philip HRSA. Spanish themes became a feature of much of his work at this stage. In 1887 he received a commission from Queen Victoria to paint the Jubilee Celebration at Westminster Abbey. He spent the last few years of his life in London. He exhibited at the RSA from 1861 until 1899. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1871 and an Academician in 1878.
