Macgregor, William York, RSA

1885 – 1923

The son of a Glasgow shipbuilder, Macgregor studied at the RSA Life School and the Slade School in London. In the early 1880's he became associated with Guthrie, Lavery, Roche and Walton and although he was older than most of the artists who formed the 'Glasgow Boys' grouping, he was linked to the group in its early years and regarded as something of a mentor by the younger artists. Due to ill health he went to South Africa in 1888 and remained there until 1890. He eventually settled at Bridge of Allan near Stirling, and was involved in the artistic community at nearby Cambuskenneth. He exhibited at the RSA from 1875 until 1921. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1898 and an Academician in 1921.
