Johnstone, George Whitton, RSA

1849 – 1901

Came to Edinburgh as a boy and was apprenticed as a cabinet maker. In 1876 he studied at the Edinburgh School of Art (formerly the Trustees Academy) and the RSA Life School in 1877 but proceeded to specialise entirely in landscape painting, mainly Scottish, in both oil and watercolour. He exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1872 until 1900. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1883 and an Academician in 1895. His daughter Dorothy Johnstone (1892 - 1980) was also a well known artist and became an ARSA in 1962.
