Blyth, Robert Henderson, RSA

1919 – 1970

Entered Glasgow School of Art at the age of 15 and studied there from 1934 until 1939. In 1940 spent a post- diploma year studying at Hospitalfield House, Arbroath under James Cowie. From 1941 he served as a Medical Orderly in the Royal Army Medical Corps and produced paintings of wounded soldiers. In 1945 he won the RSA Guthrie Award and in 1946 he joined the teaching staff of Edinburgh College of Art as an assistant to Sir William George Gillies RSA. Both artists became good friends and embarked on painting expeditions together with Blyth being influenced by Gillies' art. In 1954 Blyth began to teach at Gray's School of Art and in 1960 he became Head of the Department of Drawing and Painting. He exhibited at the RSA from 1938 until 1970, he became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1949 and an Academician in 1958.
