Lees, Charles, RSA

1800 – 1880

The eldest of a family of 7 children born to Charles Lees, Manufacturer in Cupar, and his wife Katharine Tarbane, Charles, his brother John (b.13.06.1802); and sisters Jane (b.23.09.1804), Helen (b.14.12.1806), Katharine (b.13.2.1809), Euphemia (b.23.3.1811) and Janet (b.27.1.1814) were all baptised at Cupar in December 1814. Studied art in Edinburgh and initially taught drawing before becoming a portrait painter. Apart from a period of six months spent travelling in Rome, he spent most of his life in Edinburgh. He is best known for his sporting scenes including images of golfers, skaters and curlers, increasingly, in later years he concentrated on landscapes. He was one of the early Members of the RSA in 1829 and exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1829 until 1880.
