Brown, Alexander Kellock, RSA

1849 – 1922

Born in Edinburgh but moved to Glasgow early in his life and was largely associated with the art scene in the West of Scotland. Brown had some basic training at the Glasgow School of Art and Haldane Academy. As a young man he worked as a designer in a firm of Calico printers. He became known for his Scottish landscapes in oil and watercolour, some of his watercolours reflecting the wet technique of the Hague School. He was President of Glasgow Art Club and co-founder of the Scottish Artist's Benevolent Association. Brown exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1871 until 1922 and also exhibited abroad in Munich and Prague. He became an Associate Member in 1892 and an Academician in 1908.
