Kay, Archibald, RSA

1860 – 1935

Spent a short time pursuing a commercial career and then aged seventeen he studied at Glasgow School of art under Robert Greenlees. After this he spent time studying in Paris at the Academie Julien under Boulanger and Lefevre. Kay spent eighteen years teaching in Glasgow schools and upon retiring he lived in Callander for a time. His great love and speciality was landscape painting in oil and watercolour and he particularly loved Highland scenes working often in Iona. Kay exhibted at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1884 until 1935 and also exhibited in Munich, Paris and Venice. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1916 and an Academician in 1930. He was also the Vice - President of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours for many years and one time President of the Glasgow Art Club.
