Cameron, Hugh, RSA

1835 – 1918

Initially apprenticed to an architect, Cameron proceeded to enter the Trustees Academy in 1849 as an architectural student before moving over to Robert Scott Lauder's life class in 1852 and winning first prize for drawing from the antique. Soon became associated with George Paul Chalmers and William McTaggart, fellow 'Scott Lauderites.' Cameron moved to London in 1876 but continued to visit Scotland in summer and winter before returning to Scotland permanently in 1888. He is best known for his genre paintings usually featuring children and also portraiture. He exhibited almost annually at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1854 until 1918. Cameron became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1859 and an Academician in 1869. He was the father of Hugh Armstrong Cameron.
