Archer, James A., RSA

1822 – 1904

Born in Edinburgh and educated at the High School before studying art at the Trustees Academy. Moved to Surrey circa 1863 and then to London in 1864 and later travelled to the United States and India. Particularly known for his figure paintings based upon the works of Shakespeare and Arthurian legends but also produced portraits. Began to exhibit at the RSA Annual Exhibitions in 1842 and continued to exhibit until 1904. He became an Associate of the RSA in 1850 and an Academician in 1858.
