Douglas, Andrew, RSA

1861 – 1935

Douglas began his career as an artist quite late in life and entered the Edinburgh School of Art (formerly the Trustees' Academy) and then the RSA Life School where he won the bronze medal at the Life Class in 1897 and the Keith Prize. Following his training he visited Belgium, Holland and France and also travelled to America where he stayed for a while making many friends and receiving commissions. His work mainly focuses on the landscape in the Trossachs, the Highlands and East Linton and usually features cattle. Douglas exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from1891 until 1935 and also exhibited on the continent in Munich and in the United States. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1920 and an Academician in 1932. He attended a meeting of the RSA Council apparently in good health only the day before his death.
