Caunter, Robert

1819 – 1868

An Edinburgh based artist who worked in both oils and chalks. He exhibited only once a the Royal Academy but was a regular at the RSA AX between 1840 and 1862 missing out only twice, and again in 1868. He was living in Rome in 1845 and the title of works shown at the RSA AX in 1846 and 1847 suggest that he travelled also to Amalfi, Naples, and Orvieto. Caunter became a member of the Edinburgh Angling Club in 1848 (the year after its founding) at the same time as David and George Simson, and produced several of the images which were engraved by fellow member William Forrest HRSA for the Club's book 'Songs of the Edinburgh Angling Club,' (1st ed 1858, 2nd enlarged ed 1879). His earlier works were figurative inspired by history or literary subjects, but latterly landscape became his primary interest.
