Hutchison, William Oliphant, Sir, PPRSA RSA

1889 – 1970

Worked initially in the business world after having spent a period in Paris where he studied at the L'Atelier Delecluse. Finally pursued his desired career as an artist after studying at Edinburgh College of Art from 1909-1912 under Edward Arthur Walton RSA. He married Walton's daughter Margery, sister of Cecile Walton in 1918. In 1912 he had been part of the Edinburgh Group alongside Eric Robertson, A.R. Sturrock et al. He was in Chelsea from 1920 until 1933 where he became friends with James Gunn, the sitter in his Diploma Work, and James Pryde whose portrait he also painted. When he returned to Scotland in 1933 he became Director of Glasgow School of Art, retiring from this post in 1943. Hutchison is best known as a portrait artist but he also produced landscapes and still life pieces. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1937 and an Academician in 1943. In 1950 he became the 13th President of the RSA and held the post until 1959 and was knighted in 1953. From 1959 he lived in London until his death.
