Littlejohn, William Hunter, RSA RSW RGI

1929 – 2006

Elected ARSA 1966, RSA 1973 He was commissioned to design the RSA Christmas card in 1988 and again in 2004. An exhibition of his work was shown in the RSA Friends Room in Spring 2006. Titled William Littlejohn RSA Works in Watercolour, it featured 11 hung works for sale, plus a further two, also for sale, which could be viewed on application. One of his last acts as an Academician was to propose John Inglis PRSW DA as a nominee for one of 3 vacancies for new members of the RSA. The election took place at the Assembly Meeting on 2006-10-04 the papers for which were sent out dated 2006-09-04, the day before Littlejohn died. William Littlejohn: with foreword by Colin Greenslade and essays by John McLean (Memories of Bill), Bill Connon (Conversations on Cowie), Ian McKenzie Smith (Paper Fishes), Arthur Watson (Mirror Image), Joanna Soden (The Studio Collection) and William Littlejohn (A Most Enjoyable taste of Japan); publication to accompany the exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy 2008-11-01 – 2008-12-14 (ISBN 978 0 905783 161) Vide ArtUK for 34 of his paintings in UK collections (under Littlejohn, William Hunter) The Littlejohn Bequest was the residue of his estate and comprised 194 oil paintings (less 13 which were specifically bequeathed in his will) plus the contents of his studio, amongst which was a portfolio of loose, unmounted, early works on paper which was collected by the RSA Curator and RSA Assistant Curator, on 2007-02-20.
